Info for Beginners:
How do I prepare?
Eat lots of food the week prior, stay hydrated (electrolytes), and get your sleep. Don't eat too much fat or protein the day of, stick to carbohydrates low in fiber, and eat foods that you're used to.
Give yourself about 5 days of rest and recovery just walking and stretching before the competition. Your last very heavy lifts should be done 2-3 weeks out, to give your CNS time to recover. During this body rest time, you can practice visualization. Think of every step from putting on the chalk to how you set up your feet, go through all your cues, and lift the implement in your imagination, feel which muscles you will use, practice waiting for the down command. You can make mental or physcial check lists, you can include all the gear you will wear and when you will need to put it on, what food you will eat betwen events, etc.
If the weight is not too heavy for you, you can improve your placing by practicing being faster by analyzing better ways to pick up the implement, improve cardio, or technique. Ultimately "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast". It's far faster to take your time doing something correctly once, than is to do it poorly twice (i.e. don't trip or drop anything, take your time getting a grip, or picking it up, get a good brace, etc.)
We are happy to teach you technique. You can attend Novice Night group coaching for $20, or schedule a session with Courtney for free coaching.
Beginner info - Commands, Rules, Strategies
You get 1 minute from the go command to successfully complete the lift.
The announcer will call out Judges ready?! Athletes ready! 3-2-1- GO! (Do not move until go).
We aim to have approximately 45 minutes between each event but it could be less so be ready to go around 30 mins after you last competed. We will post an athlete order for the first event, and will call out an athlete order before the start of each event. We will also post a live scoresheet for you to check. The men and women will alternate competing, starting with women; except for tire flip and front hold, where they will compete at the same time. Please manage your time appropriately so that you are fed, watered, bathroom break, warmed up and ready for the next event.
Due to time restrictions, we cannot wait for the athletes to be ready, so have all your gear on (your belt done up, your wrist wraps on, knees sleeves up, your mouthguard in etc.) and wait in line "in the hole".
(There's the person competing, the 1st person in line is "on deck" waiting in line, and the 2nd person in line is "in the hole").
Arm signals and calls.
Down - Verbal command, means good lift. Wait for the down command on overhead, and yoke (crossing the line).
Hand up means go.
Hand down means good lift/done.
Trump weights -
The heavier weight option is scored higher than the lower weight. The lower weight option will be compared to others with that weight eg, 270 yoke attempts will compare shortest time for finished distance, and compare farthest distance for distances less than 60 feet. The heavier weights will be compared together and scored higher than the lower weights regardless of time/distance achieved.
Athlete order -
The first event will be done in reverse order of sign up. It is advantageous to go last so you can know exactly how many reps you need to do to stay ahead without overdoing it. This is a part of Strongman strategy. Therefore, it is recommended to sign up early as possible and to get the best possible placing each round. After each event, a new order will be determined with the highest scorers going last and the lowest scoring people will go first, continuing in ascending order of the previous events placing; except for the last event where order is based on ascending order of total points. The advantage of going last/later allows someone to strategically calculate how many reps they need to do to stay in or improve their placing.
Scoring -
However many people are in the class equals the points awarded to 1st place. For example, 5 people in a category, means 5 points for 1st place. 2nd place gets 4 pts, 3rd place gets 3 and so on. If you can't lift the implement, then you get zero points. Ties are averaged (all the potential placing points divided by number of athletes) eg if there is 5 people in the category, and two people get 2nd place, then they share the average of the 2nd and 3rd place, 4 + 3 points = 7 total possible points, divided 2 people 7/2 = 3.5 pts each.
You do not need to get first place several times to win, you just need do well enough to have the highest overall score. Someone who scores consistently in the top half can still get 1st place or podium.
Mistakes will happen, don't worry you can still make up a lot of points if you stay positive and keep trying!
